Concert Band
Dr. Denise Grant
DENISE GRANT has earned respect and praise as a
conductor and educator of great musical depth and artistic sensitivity. She has
held conducting positions at Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of
Toronto, and University of Regina. She earned her Ph.D. (conducting and music
education) from the University of Minnesota and also holds degrees from
Dalhousie University (M.Ed.) and Acadia University (B.Mus.Ed.). During her
tenure, she founded the University of Toronto and University of Regina conducting
symposiums, served as co-founding editor of the Canadian Band Association
journal, Canadian Winds, and premiered many new works for wind
ensemble. She advocates for the creation and performance of new music by
Canadian and women composers, in particular. She recently premiered composer
Sandy Moore's song cycle, Vox Humana, at the Open Waters new
music festival in Halifax and recorded the soundtrack for John Walker's
award-winning documentary film, Arctic Defenders. As an educator,
Denise has served on music association boards across Canada and guest conducted
provincial honour bands both nationally and internationally, reflecting a
commitment to music education and the deep-seeded belief that the act of making
music together creates connection and develops compassionate, critically
thinking humans.
Dr Steven Capaldo
Dr. Steven Capaldo has
distinguished himself as one of the most respected music educators, wind
conductors and conductor educators in Australia, earning academic and musical
recognition internationally.
Dr. Capaldo is currently
an Associate Professor of Music Education & Conducting and Wind Symphony
Conductor at the University of Victoria, Canada. He has previously held
positions in Music Education at the University of Wollongong (Australia) and
the University of Victoria, and was the Conductor of the Sydney University Wind
Orchestra and the UNSW Wind Symphony.
An active writer, Dr.
Capaldo composes, arranges and transcribes music for wind orchestras, symphony
orchestras, festivals and concerts and his works have been performed by groups
in Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States, and recorded on Klavier
records (US). He has been listed as a composer in the book The Band Down Under, a finalist in several
international composition competitions and published with Brolga Music
Australia.
An Assistant Producer for
eight Klavier Records CD, Dr. Capaldo became a full voting member for the US
Grammy Awards in 2010 and was Chair of the Australian Jury Panel for the 2017
Eurovision Song Contest.
Dr. Capaldo is
highly-active and in-demand as a conductor, clinician and adjudicator having
worked at local, state/provincial, national and international levels including
MusicFest and Chief Conductor of the British Columbia Honor Wind Ensemble.
Committed to providing professional learning opportunities for music educators
and conductors, Dr. Capaldo has been a conducting clinician at the 2017
Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference, the Chief Conducting
Clinician for the 2017 Qld ABODA Conducting Camp and an Associate Instructor
for the 2016, 2017 & 2018 NSW ABODA Conducting Camps. In 2018, Dr. Capaldo
conducted a Qld State Honours Ensemble and presented at the Australian National
Band and Orchestra Conference.
Dr. Darrin Oehlerking
Dr. Darrin Oehlerking currently serves
as Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the College of Arts and Science at the
University of Saskatchewan, and is Professor of Music in the USask School For
The Arts. He previously served as Director of Bands and Jazz at Bemidji State
University in Bemidji, Minnesota, and as Music Coordinator for the Louis Riel
School Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His post-secondary experience also
includes assignments at the University of Manitoba and Iowa Wesleyan College.
Originally
from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dr. Oehlerking earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in
Wind Conducting at The University of Iowa, where he studied with Dr. Myron
Welch. He also studied with Dr. Dale J. Lonis at the University of Manitoba,
where he earned his Masters in Music Performance with an emphasis in
Conducting. His undergraduate work was also at Manitoba, where he earned
separate Bachelors degrees in Music and Education.
Prior to
his appointment at Saskatchewan, Dr. Oehlerking taught a wide variety of
students and musicians at the primary, secondary and post-secondary levels. His
ensembles have enjoyed success on local, national and international stages,
garnering outstanding performance awards and showcase invitations from a
variety of organizations.
Dr.
Oehlerking recently conducted the 2022 National Youth Band of Canada, held at
York University in Toronto, Ontario. He has previously served as the President
of the Canadian Band Association, as well as the President of the Saskatchewan
Band Association. He is also a Yamaha Artist/Educator. Dr. Oehlerking has conducted
ensembles, served as an adjudicator, conference presenter and clinician across Canada,
as well as in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and the
Netherlands. He has had two arrangements for wind band published by Eighth Note
Publications – Regimental March of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and
Souvenir de Quebec.
Jazz Band
Dr. Dean McNeill
Dean McNeill has been
contributing to the Canadian music scene in a variety of capacities for decades
as an award-winning musician/educator and arts administrator. As Professor of
Brass & Jazz for 26 years at the University of Saskatchewan (9 of which
serving as Head of the Music Department) Dean is the recipient of the UofS’s Dwaine
Nelson Teaching Award, USASK Student’s Union Teaching Excellence Award,
the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival’s Special Recognition Award, Saskatchewan
Choral Federation’s Outstanding Administrator’s
Award, and, the Queen
Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Saskatchewan). Dean is honored to have
shared the stage with the likes of Jon Ballantyne, Tommy Banks, Wayne Bergeron,
David Braid, Dee Daniels, Phil Dwyer, Hugh Fraser, Mark Fewer, Guy Few,
Wycliffe Gordon, Kelly Jefferson, Ingrid Jensen, Michael Kaeshammer, Alastair
Kay, Bob Mintzer, PJ Perry, Maria Schneider, Denzal Sinclaire, and Brad Turner. Dean was a member of the Saskatoon
Symphony for 23 seasons. He is currently the A.D. of the Saskatoon Jazz
Orchestra which is in its 11th season. Dean has conducted the
Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra on multiple occasions and he has been involved in many
interdisciplinary projects and CDs that includes six USASK Jazz Ensemble ‘Bumper
Crop’ CDs (as conductor), various Western Canadian Music Awards-nominated
CDs (e.g. The Saskatchewan Suite: The Story of Us (performer), The Complete
Rebirth Of The Cool (performer/composer), and *O Music (performer)).
*Won a Western Canadian Music Award for classical composition of the
year.
Dean attended MacEwan
University (M.dip.), McGill University (B.Mus. Jazz), and the University of
North Texas (M.Mus. Jazz).

Andre White
Andre plays both piano and drums, and has appeared with many Canadian and American musicians, both in Montreal and elsewhere. Some of the performers he has accompanied include Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Dave Liebman, Don Thompson, George Coleman, Steve Grossman, Sonny Greenwich, Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne, Junior Cook, Peter Bernstein, Bob Berg, Rob McConnell, Gary Bartz, Craig Handy, Ben Monder and Kevin Dean.
Andre recently retired from an over 30 year employment as Associate Professor in Jazz Studies at McGill University, where he taught Jazz History, Jazz Improv, and private instruction in jazz piano and drums. He has also continued to free lance as a recording engineer and producer.
