Jazz Performance

Each Ensemble is allocated a maximum of 30 minutes of performance and a 30 minute clinic (including stage transition times). Performances are scheduled in groups of three (pod system). All the groups in your pod will come together in the performance space.

Novice (Grades 1-2)

Ideal for: Beginning jazz bands, typically middle school or early high school students who are just starting to learn the fundamentals of jazz.

  • Grade 1 (Very Easy):

    • Description: Designed for students with limited experience in jazz. These pieces focus on basic rhythms, simple melodies, and basic chord changes. The emphasis is on playing together as an ensemble, with limited solo opportunities.
    • Typical Characteristics: Straightforward rhythms (quarter notes, eighth notes), simple swing feel, limited range, and basic articulations. Solos, if present, are usually written out or use a few notes over a basic blues scale.
  • Grade 2 (Easy):

    • Description: Suitable for students who have some experience in jazz. Music at this level introduces slightly more complex rhythms and harmonies, but still focuses on ensemble playing and the basics of jazz style.
    • Typical Characteristics: Introduction of more syncopation and swing rhythms, slightly expanded range, and more use of dynamics. Solos might include more notes and simple improvisation over basic chord changes.
